The Winter Gardens - Blackpool

Showing at Other

winter-gar.jpgBlackpool Council leader Peter Callow has challenged leisure Parcs who own the much loved establishment to show their hand today in the much awaited fait of our Winter Gardens.

This has all come about due to much speculation on the internet that the Winter Gardens is due to close soon.

With even the likes of the political conferences snubbing Blackpool for the more glitzy establishments in the likes of Manchester, the Winter Gardens fate is uncertain.

Blackpool Council at present pays Leisure Parcs £1m a year to secure this conference venue, but this agreement will end in 2009.

Will we still have the Winter Gardens then?

Councilor Callow said: “We’re paying council tax-payers’ money out and getting fewer and fewer conferences.”

“I think Leisure Parcs are letting down the people of Blackpool. They don’t appear to be putting money into their buildings to the extent they should.”

“It’s almost as though they are marking time.”

“I’m very concerned about the future of that fine building.”

“They have their own agenda.”

“They’re playing their cards very close to their chest and I don’t think that’s good enough at a time when we’re pulling out all the stops to regenerate this town.”

“I think the people of Blackpool deserve to know.”

Surely this is devastating news for Blackpool, why is everyone so quick to remove what heritage we have left?

I honestly couldn’t image not having the Winter Gardens here, this would truly be a sad day for Blackpool!

I agree it would be very sad to see the Winter Gardens go, but I have to admit the place is looking pretty shabby.

Everytime I go past it seems that all they have going on is indoor car boot sales, which isn’t exactly the best use of the building!

As a former employee of Leisure Parcs the ethos form the bosses was they didn’t really care about investing into the venues, they would when they had too, i.e. there was a hole in the pier had to be fixed but they wouldn’t re-paint the shabby doors as it as ‘ascetic’ and not essential.

Dear Mr. BFC Blog, I presume that you meant that the owners of Leisure Parcs would not paint shabby doors for “aesthetic” not “ascetic” reasons.
